What can I say about how much I love this show? After seeing the cast's performance on the 2008 Tony Awards Show, I immediately went online and ordered the original cast recording. For the next two months, that CD was a permanent fixture in my car stereo. It's all I listened to! I dare anyone who hears the music from this show to try and stay in your seat. It's not possible! And beyond the music, there is the story itself. Though the show is set in the predominately Cuban/Puerto Rican/Dominican neighborhood of New York's Washington Heights, the themes are universal: family, tradition, and struggling to find one's place in the world when everything familiar is rapidly changing. It's like Fiddler on the Roof with pulsating Latin rhythms, hip-hop beats, and electrifying choreography. As a fan of musical theater as well as the many genres of Latin music, In the Heights allows me to have my cake and eat it too!
